The Real Cost of a Nintendo Wii
The Nintendo Wii is a pretty popular game system right now. It’s in such demand that Nintendo can’t even manufacture units quick enough for consumers. My brother stood in line at the crack of dawn to get one a while back and I have to say that it’s a pretty neat piece of machinery. Heck, even my parents are into playing Wii Sports with us every once in a while.
The Wii has a couple of other cool features besides the fact that it’s a new console that has wireless motion controlled game play; it’s able to connect to a wireless network so you can go online, it’s backward compatible with GameCube games, and it’s possible to purchase game from older consoles and play them on the Wii via the Virtual Console area of the Wii Shop Channel.
Right now the cost of a Wii is $250 plus any local sales tax or shipping costs if you order one online. For that price the Wii console, the power and TV connections, a Wii Remote (the controller), Nunchuk (I’ll explain below), and Wii Sports (a game), are included. The problem is that once everything is hooked up and running only one person can play Wii Sports at a time.
Below is a list of the Nintendo accessories that might be needed if more than 1 player will be using it at a time.
Wii Remote - $40
This is the controller that all of the players will be using to control whatever is going on in the game. The Wii can have up to 4 players at a time so up to 3 more controllers will need to be purchased.
Nunchuk - $20
This is a controller that is plugged into the Wii Remote. It’s mainly used for sports and first person shooter games as a way for the player to move around. It will be needed in order to play Wii Sports’ Boxing. Since the Wii can have up to 4 players at a time up to 3 more Nunchuks will need to be purchased. Note - The Nunchuk will not work without being plugged into a Wii Remote.
It makes sense to get both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk at the same time because eventually more and more games are going to require the Nunnchuk to play. Heck, the Nunchuk is already needed to play Boxing in Wii Sports and it’s included with the system. Basically it’s going to be an extra $60 per player on the Wii. To get a full 4 player setup and a Wii console it’s going to cost $430 plus tax or shipping! That’s not including any games other than the Wii Sports game that is included with the console.
Some other accessories that might need to be purchased are:
GameCube controller - $25
This will only needed to play GameCube games. If you already have controllers they will work with the Wii.
GameCube memory card - $20
This will only be needed to save GameCube games. If you already own a memory card it will work with the Wii.
Classic Controller - $20
This is recommended for any Virtual Console games. The Wii Remote and GameCube controller will work with some games but the Classic Controller will work for any game purchased from the Virtual Console area of the Wii Shop Channel.
Wii Points Card - $20 to $50
In order to buy anything from the Wii Shop Channel you’ll need two things: 1. Have the Wii connected to the internet and 2. Wii Points. Everything on the Wii Shop Channel is priced by points instead of actual money. In the U.S. 1 point = $0.01. Wii Points are mainly for the Virtual Console area of the Wii Shop Channel where games from the NES all the way up to N64 can be purchased and downloaded to your Wii. Prices are anywhere from 500 points ($5.00) to 1000 points ($10.00). Wii Points can be purchased from any gaming store or from the Wii Shop Channel directly.

Any ideas if the future of the Wii will include better than the 480p. Not that it bothers me much :)…
